Restoring the Legendary Kolbenka

It all began in 2020 during a team-building event with our customers at Čierny Balog. At the time, we had no idea that this would spark an idea that would draw us into an extraordinary project. After the event, we were approached by Aneta Orolínová, a marketing specialist from the Čiernohronská Railway, with a request that was simply impossible to refuse. That’s how a wonderful collaboration began, which over time turned into friendship and a series of projects we are rightly proud of.

For four years, we were involved in restoring historic carriages while dreaming of the day we could renovate a steam locomotive. This year, our dream came true. We brought the legendary "Kolbenka" back to life—a ČKD steam locomotive No. 7 from 1948 that had patiently waited for years for its chance to shine again.

The first step was precise sandblasting. The locomotive was stripped of all layers of old paint, corrosion, and dirt that had accumulated over the years. Next, we applied a base coat of Tikkurila TEMACOAT GPL-S PRIMER, which provided a strong protective foundation.

The topcoat was Tikkurila TEMADUR 90 polyurethane paint with a high gloss, known for its long-lasting resistance to weather and UV radiation. This combination restored the locomotive’s beautiful shine and ensures its long-term protection.

Special attention was paid to details—the interior of the cabin was highlighted with a contrasting red color to preserve historical accuracy. The interior surfaces were painted with Tikkurila TEMADUR 50.

After two days of intensive work, we achieved a result worth celebrating—the locomotive shines again as it once did. And even though it will never run on tracks again, it will become a treasured exhibit in front of the railway station, reminding visitors of the era of steam and iron.
